The gloriata is a festival held four times a year in the city of Olym Thalas, on the twelfth of Taulic, Leorust, Scoperust, and Aquilm. It coincides with the end of the four seasonal courts. The Gloriata honors the sacrifice needed to maintain the balance of Io’s creation.
The Gloriata is a series of gladiatorial games, which vary based on the season. Before the tournaments the participants parade through the limbs of the Thalas and are ritually cleansed. The entire city gathers to watch the games, which are often deadly.
The participants in the Gloriata include volunteers, wards of the city, and those sentenced to participate by the seasonal courts. Volunteers who survive the games earn additional food allowances from the Statum Congress. Wards who survive are granted shelter for the following year. Sentenced criminals are cleared of their crimes or consigned to become wards, depending on their crime. Wards who survive for the term of their sentence, or adulthood for orphans, are granted pardon or citizenship.
